What are free radicals and what helps against them?

Free radicals act in our body like chemical robbers. They are unstable because they are missing at least one electron. To compensate for this lack, they steal an electron from an innocent molecule. As a result, the robbed molecule itself becomes a free radical and tries to take an electron from its surroundings. This dangerous chain reaction is controlled by radical scavengers in our body.

Various factors such as illnesses, stress, and intense physical activity promote the formation of free radicals. Inflammation and allergies can also increase their number. External culprits such as air pollution, pesticides, sunlight, smoke, certain medications, unhealthy food additives, and heavy metals also contribute to their occurrence.

Antioxidants such as OPC (oligomeric proanthocyanidins) stop the electron theft of free radicals by generously donating electrons. In doing so, antioxidants act faster than our own cells. They interrupt dangerous chain reactions and protect our body from the harmful effects of free radicals. Our skin in particular has to struggle with free radicals, as they can disrupt collagen and elastin, which may lead to dry skin and wrinkles. For this reason, it is important to supply our body with sufficient antioxidants to protect it from the negative effects of these unwanted molecules.
