MSM Explained Simply
MSM, or methylsulfonylmethane, is an organic compound with a high sulfur content. Around one third of its molecular weight consists of sulfur. MSM occurs naturally in small amounts in foods such as eggs and milk. It is also available in concentrated form as a food supplement. Sulfur is a natural component of the human body. It is found, among other things, in the sulfur containing amino acids methionine and cysteine. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Proteins perform numerous functions in the body and are components of many enzymes, for example. MSM is available in various forms, including powders, capsules and tablets. None of these forms is inherently better than the others. What matters is the composition of the product and individual needs. Which effects of MSM have been investigated, and what claims may be made?
MSM is the subject of scientific research. However, there are currently no authorised health claims for MSM itself in Switzerland. Such effects may therefore not be claimed.
How much MSM per day is appropriate?
There is no official reference value for the daily intake of MSM. In food supplements for adults, a maximum of 1,000 mg of MSM per recommended daily serving is permitted. The recommended daily serving of Alpinamed MSM Curcuma Tablets is two tablets. They should be taken with or shortly after a meal. Two tablets provide a total of 1,000 mg of MSM. Taking MSM with or after food is recommended to support good gastrointestinal tolerance. MSM is generally well tolerated. In rare cases, mild digestive discomfort or skin reactions may occur.
What does molybdenum have to do with sulfur?
The trace element molybdenum is a component of what is known as the molybdenum cofactor. This cofactor is required by several enzymes, including sulfite oxidase, an enzyme involved in sulfur metabolism.
